16 June 2012
From 20-22 June world leaders gathered for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Marking the twentieth anniversary of the first Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, this year groups and organisations across the globe are calling for greater people power and democracy in the UN negotiations, and an end to greenwashed solutions to ecological collapse.
During the Rio+20 talks, young activists from all over Europe came together to call for an end to the corporate hijack of our planet. Many Young FoE groups did an action, you can check these out here.
On the left is the Irish submission and below is the message to go with it.
"Sian and Grace mainly focused their messages on how the politicians involved with Rio+20 seem to have forgotten exactly why there is an Earth Summit in the first place. As Sian and Grace explained, the politicians have been squabbling over their own selfish ends, seeming to forget that the reason that they are in Rio is to prevent a world catastrophe which will effect every individual on earth. They instead are focusing on capital gain, supporting more corporations and literally sacrificing the Earth with their inaction."
