The 19th session of the conference of parties (COP19) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) kicked off last Monday here in Warsaw.

During the week, the Australian government were slated for rethinking their emissions reduction pledge and have since been accused of not doing enough to tackle climate change.

Australia was only one of a number of countries that have back tracked on their emission targets during the COP thus far, which conveys the extreme lack of political will to take progressive steps on these urgent climate issues. They have now been awarded the’ Fossil of The Day’ award for having abdicating from their promises and responsibilities on climate change

Tim Flannery (Climate Council) said “we can’t leave a matter as important as climate change to Australian politicians. We must stand up and be counted.” Today, almost 30,000 people gathered in Melbourne for a climate change rally at the Treasury Gardens to call for stronger action on climate change. This impressive collective turnout clearly shows the high levels of public dissatisfaction with the Australian Government’s regressive approach to climate change. The new plans are said to lead to an increase in Australian emissions by 2020, rather than their 5% emission reduction target levels set in 2000.

Australia seems to have lost their ambition for taking action on climate change, we need to continue to convey our discontent with these outrageous responses from governments and DEMAND action on climate change now!
