DIT held their first Green Week last week and Young Friends of the Earth Ireland were participating in the festivities. The Week was designed as a series of roadshows that visited each of the main campus locations. YFoE contributed by doing some chalk and green graffiti demonstrations, as well as meeting with students to talk about the many ways they could get involved in grassroots environmental and climate justice action.

We were very interested to hear student and staff feedback on how they would like to see DIT go green. Some students suggested DIT ‘ditch the paper (coffee) cups’ on campus and for DIT to develop alternative approaches such as reusable coffee cups, which would allow students to get cheaper coffee, reduce their waste and it would go easier on their pockets! Students were also making some interesting suggestions about DIT setting up some sort of 'bike hire' initiative with the new GrangeGorman campus, which could be modelled on Dublin bikes. It would promote a clean and affordable alternative to transport to those students living close to the college and a healthy attitude towards supporting green travel alternatives!
Filipa Ferraz, one of the coordinators of the Green Week, said, “We have designed the Green Week schedule to show people in DIT how they can make a real difference, and live in a more sustainable manner”.
The Green-Campus Programme is an evolution of the Green-Schools Programme (known internationally as Eco-Schools) for all post secondary and higher education facilities. It encourages a partnership approach to environmental education, management and action in third level institutions. The Prorgamme primarily aims to ensure that members of a campus community can engage in a meaningful way to enhance sustainability on campus.
